I just watched the Rerez video essay about the Ouya debacle earlier today. I followed Ouya news for a bit when the hype was strong, and I knew it fell off hard. But man, I didn’t realize just how bad it was.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you follow YouTubers that are part of the "Bread tube" ring? Why/why not?
5·1 month agoAn important thing to note is that “Breadtube” is an exonym. That is, no supposed “member” of Breadtube joined or formed a group with that label - it’s just a label that some leftists put on a few video essayists who are/were either socialists or were perceived to be close enough.
Contrapoints, Lindsay Ellis, and HBomberguy were some bigger examples of this “group”. All of them can be critiqued for different reasons, but I will usually give them a watch when they put out something. I usually learn something of value, IMHO.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are children always portrayed as the epitome of "innocence", when a lot of kids are evil af and bully their peers, and name-calling runs rampant in schools?
10·2 months agoLashing out with violence is definitely ingrained in most people as part of the fight/flight/freeze response, which then gets shaped by experience, etc.
“Beating the shit out of people for fun” is waaaaay further down the line in terms of behavioral development, personal experience, and cultural influence, for sure.

18·2 months agoThere are some ingrained behaviors, instincts, emotional reactions, etc. While we’re not fully blank slates, there is definitely a lot of room for influence to shape children into different sorts of adults.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Moderately ethical printer recommendation?
1·2 months agoMine does, yeah. Normally I wouldn’t put it on the network, but I’ve just not had a decent place where I could plug it into my PC.
It could just be my model is old enough they don’t bother trying to gimp it remotely? Who knows.

4·2 months agoI’ve been using a black and white toner Brother printer I got in 2013 and it’s still chugging along. My 3rd party toner cartridges also work well. Sucks your color ones aren’t though.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Aight. Let's be honest. How many of you dress for yourselves, and how many dress for others?
2·2 months agoFeel like I’m in between.
I usually wear simple, single color Tshirts, a light jacket, and one of a small stock of pants.
In a sense I dress just for me - easy and simple means I don’t have to spend time choosing, which I do like. A light jacket let’s me easily get warmer or cooler without having to completely change.
In another, I dress for others - I don’t wear graphic tees very much since high school because I don’t want anyone judging me for what I like, or misunderstanding and prejudging me. With plain tees, I just don’t have to deal with that particular social anxiety.
vonbaronhans@midwest.socialtoAsk Lemmy NSFW@lemmynsfw.com•Have you ever heard someone refer to a body part as a "creature feature"?English
3·3 months agoNot in real life, but there’s a children’s educational show on PBS called The Kratt Brothers where “creature feature” and “creature power” are relatively common phrases.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do I fact-check the news (step by step)?
6·4 months agoThis is splitting hairs a bit, but Ground News is more of an aggregator with useful framing than a source in and of itself.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do I fact-check the news (step by step)?
21·4 months agoTo be fair, CNN “leans left” in the same way US Democrat liberals “lean left”. Which is to say, socially progressive (usually) and economically capitalist.
Assuming I’m using those terms right, which I think I am, at least in the context of the US.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do so many conservatives in the US bash on California all the time?
71·4 months agoIt ain’t perfect (cost of living has always been relatively high, even for states with comparable cities), but it’s far and away better than any red state to my knowledge.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•the young always think they have all the right answers but THIS eventually happens
3·7 months agoThat’s exactly it, yep. I’m well over apologizing at this point.
And yeah, I also moved back home for a while after college, and it was a bad time. Plenty of good, but plenty I’m glad to leave behind. Let us all strive to be better people than our parents were, I say.
I’m glad you’re out, and I hope you’re doing well. Stay safe out there!

2·7 months agoYeah, I’m conflicted about my family enough as it is. But push comes to shove, I’m fine on my own at this point.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•the young always think they have all the right answers but THIS eventually happens
4·7 months agoAh, that’s the thing. He never demanded an apology. He sulked, and it was others in the family who learned about it (through either me or him) that told me I was wrong and to apologize.
I’ve never been one to back down from a conflict I thought was worthwhile. It wasn’t until I was literally a married adult when an in-law (whom we love dearly) told my SO about how my family “sweeps things under the rug”. When my SO told me later, I was like “nah… but wait do we though?” That led to a lot of revisiting old memories and realizing how conflict avoidant we really were (except for me, lol).
Yeah, if either of my parents demanded an apology from me for anything right now… they have some choice words coming.

If I’m not mistaken (and I might be) the immutability can actually be toggled off for power users.
