Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you speak a language that has a formal 'you', when do you use it?
2·16 days agoThis makes sense at first glance but I have never heard anyone do this ever, and it seems like it might make the situation feel even more awkward.

4·19 days agoLiving in Quebec this is my own private little social anxiety nightmare when meeting new people. You want to talk about pronouns? This is the real pronouns issue. Do I go with tu and seem overly familiar? Do I go with vous and seem standoffish? Does it depend on age? Degrees of separation? Station in life? Nnnnnnnnnngggggghhhh
The change is coming for you guys as well. I’ve travelled to Colombia on a regular basis over the past 20 years or so, and transmisión mecánica has gone from nearly ubiquitous to almost exclusively an econobox option. Maybe performance cars as well I guess? Wouldn’t know about those
Never heard of Horsey Sauce before. Is it, ummmmm. Is it, y’know, white and viscous?

Technology@lemmy.world•A cartoonist's review of AI art, by Matthew InmanEnglish
1·2 months agoSounds quite similar to Nick Cave’s letter on the topic, read here by Stephen Fry. (anyone feel free to reply with a piped link, for some reason it’s never worked for me)
Read this as “sharter edition” and I think it still works

Point of terminology. Do crackheads “tweak”? I thought that was a meth-specific concept
Yeah, it could be rephrased a little as well, like “guess I stood up too fast again”
I was actually wondering about that but was too lazy to check. Thanks for the correction

67·6 months agoIt pains me to argue this point, but are you sure there isn’t a legitimate use case just this once? The text says that this was aimed at making Wikipedia more accessible to less advanced readers, like (I assume) people whose first language is not English. Judging by the screenshot they’re also being fully transparent about it. I don’t know if this is actually a good idea but it seems the least objectionable use of generative AI I’ve seen so far.
It doesn’t scan. But it’s not bothering me. Nope not at all. Not in any way annoyed by the fact that there’s one too many syllables in the second
verseline. Only a complete pedant would get HUNG UP ON THAT RIGHT HAHAHAHAHA
'Cause your friends don’t dance
And if they don’t dance
That’s a personal choice and I suppose we could be friends anyways, I mean dancing isn’t really a fundamental criterion as far as choosing friends is concerned, but right this moment we’re going dancing so I don’t think your friends would enjoy it being as they don’t dance unless I guess they just want to enjoy the music that would be perfectly fine
Rhyming “do ya” and “hallelujah” has got to be one of the ballsiest plays in music history
