The woman next to me in the hospital was asked if she could be pregnant right after the nurse checked her birth year at more than 80 years ago. We all had a little laugh at that one.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Did I do a good deed or bad deed?
3·3 days agoWhile hiking with my boyfriend and dog I was waiting outside a supermarket one day while he was shopping. A woman and her daughter came to give us some dogtreats and a bag of sweet buns because they thought I was homeless. I couldn’t do anything but gracefully accept. We did enjoy the sweet buns and a few days later we spotted a woman with her daughter begging at the train station and were able to pass on the kindness. We are also always on the lookout for beggars with dogs to share out some treats. All in all it caused more goodness (and only slight embarresment) in our lives.
From the report: This report is a product of field and remote research carried out between October 2019 and May 2021. The report’s findings and conclusions are based on first-hand testimonies that Amnesty International gathered from former detainees of the internment camps and other people who were present in Xinjiang after 2017, as well as from an analysis of satellite imagery and data. The report also draws on testimonial evidence and confidential government documents gathered and analysed by journalists, scholars, and other human rights organizations. One hundred twenty-eight people were interviewed for this report: 55 former detainees of internment camps in Xinjiang (39 men and 16 women), 15 other witnesses who lived in or visited Xinjiang since 2017, and 68 family members of people from Xinjiang who are currently missing or detained. The majority of the interviewees were Kazakh, a minority were Uyghurs, and a small number were Kyrgyz or Han Chinese.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it Possible that a Typical Quantity of Sneezes is Inherited/Genetic?
20·5 days agoOn QI (bbc quiz show) they once said the sound you make when you sneeze is cultural/learned, so I wouldn’t be surprised the number of sneezes is also somehow cultural.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How does trash collection/recycling work where you live, and do you like the system?
3·14 days agoI once called the police in amsterdam because of smoke coming out of one of those at 6 am on new years eve. Still unsure if the police was not impressed because I sounded too drunk to be trusted or because it was just the gazillionth of the night that was set on fire.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•With bathing, water recirculation is more easily accepted.
3·14 days agoI think before modern plumbing it was quite normal for more people sharing a bath one after the other, or going to large bath houses. The house I grew up in from the early 1900s didn’t have a bathroom and people would handwash and occasionally fill a bath in the kitchen. (We had a shower built in, but it was obviously not part of the original design)

2·15 days agoI think I heard someone on a podcast with seizures triggered by lights and she said wearing sunglasses and in extreme cases closing one eye helped reduce the effects on her a lot.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do people with epilepsy triggered by flashing lights, drive past trees that are backlit by the sun?
7·15 days agoThose warnings are called auras, and you can have visual or auditory auras warning you of a seizure.
There are also people born that do not fit in the biological definition of male or female. Same image applies to them.
But we also prioritize research where we suspect/hypothesize differences, so I think even if all research was published it wouldn’t necessarily be a normal distribution.
I was born in the nineties and just moved to France. It’s a real struggle.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What do they do with aborted fetuses?
8·1 month agoi imagine cremating fetusses is one of the lesser emotionally traumatizing things hospital workers have to deal with every day.
Also, if the fetus is big enough to be (near) viable and the abortion happens for medical reasons or in case of stillbirths, I hope/expect parents are given the option for a proper burial.

Everyone being build differently is what makes us resilient as a species and causes evolution. Also, if everyone was equally good at golf it wouldn’t be a fun sport anymore.
