Microsoft is the “Linux salesman of the year” because most people switching to Linux do it just because Windows has become so terrible.

Reddit just feels like Facebook these days. Niche subs are not affected as much, but the vast majority is just low quality trash, gossip, selfies and unhinged political discussion.
When people say they want Lemmy to become the new reddit, they are not talking about the reddit of today, more like the one from <2015.
Hosting costs probably. Rolling back a patch is a rare scenario and Steam would have to host every version of every game in their store on their servers indefinitely.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most interesting urban legend from your hometown?
29·2 years agoThere are a number of legends surrounding the pirate Klaus Störtebeker, who was active in the 14th century. The most popular one is probably that when he and his crew were facing execution, he made a deal with the mayor of Hamburg that if he manages to walk past any of his fellow prisoners after his beheading, they’d be spared. His headless body supposedly walked past eleven pirates until the executioner made him stumble. The mayor did not keep his word and all 73 members of the crew were killed.
I hated Windows 8 enough to put up with it at the time. It’s nuts how much things have improved since then.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Does Reddit shadowban mentions of Lemmy?English
372·2 years agoI think the reality is that no one on Reddit gives a shit about Lemmy
I wouldn’t be so sure:

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What personal project are you working on currently? Would you mind showing it?
8·2 years agoI know a guy that put one of these on his 2003 Smart ForTwo.
It’s only half a kneel, so let’s just call it eel.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the strangest tech related bug you can't resolve?
6·2 years agoNot sure about this specific model, but in older cars things like this are almost always caused by either too high or too low resistance in the wiring harness or headlight assembly itself because that’s how the car detects when a light is out.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Lemmy.ml is acting as a proxy instance for Hexbear and should be defederated by any instances that defederate from HexbearEnglish
394·2 years agoThis is less about the instance as a whole. The !worldnews@lemmy.ml mods are notoriously terrible. It’s best to just avoid the community altogether.
It’s not meant to be taken literally. Language evolves and boomer no longer exclusively refers to baby boomers, it’s just a general Gen-Z term for older people.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your thoughts on reddit mods? How are Lemmy mods like compared to them?
14·2 years agoI’m pretty sure a lot of the mods here on Lemmy are just former moderators from reddit that were fed up with the site (me included).
That’s the most reasonable choice imo, you could probably earn a fair bit of money with those.
I experienced that too and ended up just disabling the timed sleep mode. Not sure if it’s actually related to KDE software or just a Linux bug in general though.

47·2 years ago“I’M NOT INTERNET SHOUTING”, he internet shouted.

Same here, it’s the reason why I kicked Ubuntu off my laptop. They removed any way to choose and made it such a pain to get around the Snap bullshit. I’m on Linux because I want to choose what I do with my system.
