Linux@programming.dev•New to Linux which OS to use?English
18·16 hours agoMint is popular for beginners. I went with Debian KDE because I wanted something a little more minimalistic and boring. Fedora and OpenSUSE are also good options.
If you want to stick with a Windows-like desktop, pick a KDE distro over GNOME.
🤨 can’t tell if serious

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you feel sad about the fact that you'll probably die within 100 years (or less) and you (well... that's most of us tbh) can't do much to leave a significant positive legacy?English
81·2 days agoMost everyone has an innate urge to live forever somehow. It’s an expression of our fear of death. They make children, or inventions, or buildings, or artworks, or whatever “legacy” they can think will persist after their death.
It’s natural to feel this way. We’re wired for it.
The cruel trick is that nothing lasts forever. We yearn for things we can’t have.
That little piss stain is certifiably insane
Collapse is a process. There will probably be an extended period where we still have electricity, but lots of social unrest, food scarcity, etc.

Linux@programming.dev•Frustrated Windows users are switching to Linux because of Microsoft’s Windows 11 shenanigansEnglish
3·9 days agoYeah, that’s my biggest hesitation with recommending Linux to absolutely everyone. It’s super easy to install most of the time. But most people are not equipped to work around issues that may come up, and then the computer is as good as bricked until they find help.

5·11 days agoThe socks have a bit of a learning curve, depending on what you want to do with them, but it’s worth it. It’s such a huge relief to not care how much more Windows is getting enshittified this week, since it’s not my problem anymore.

🤷🏻 We’re still fundamentally irrational animals. Our powers of reason are limited, and our quirks are easily manipulated.
I think this has a LOT to do with how susceptible a person is to reason that goes against their existing beliefs. I also turned away from the conservative rhetoric in my early twenties. I wasn’t really invested in any group, just talking with a few dudes on a gun forum. I didn’t have a lot to lose in terms of social investment. But for rural people, going against the right wing narrative could mean being isolated from their whole physical community.
