Didn’t they start using cloudflare to protect against constant ddos attacks causing downtime? Out of both options, having downtime from external servers failing is less of a headache to the admins (they are volunteers, this is the most important factor) than having downtime from internal servers failing.

It feels like every uk news site does it. The guardian and the independent are the ones I have trouble with the most. Reader mode “fixes” it though.

Games@lemmy.world•Steam Hardware [new Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and VR headset Steam Frame, coming in 2026]English
18·20 days agoThe frame being a standalone linux headset is huge, hopefully this does to vr what the deck did to pancake.
(I know vr works on linux already but it’s a pain)

Games@lemmy.world•Sliced off the tip of my thumb, what are some good one handed games?English
41·25 days agoIf you can still use a mouse well, grand strategy games can be played with one hand. Despite all the (deserved) criticism they get, paradox games are a lot of fun. (and their modern ones even feel like a full game without having to buy any dlc) They can be a bit difficult to keep up with without a keyboard though so play on lower speeds.
If you are more concious about who you give your money to, endless legend 2 is a 4x published by hooded horse that is very good (think civ but fantasy) and since it is turn based it is a lot easier to play with just a mouse.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who were in school during the pandemic– how are things going with you?English
1·1 month agoNone, I rarely text my friends because I am usually just with them, the only times I text them is to organise something in person.
I’d say that, depending on your hobbies, it’s a 50/50 split. People who don’t play video games spend more time with friends irl and people who don’t have many hobbies outside of video games spend more time with friends online.
I would also say a lot of stuff in my life has pushed me towards spending more time with friends online. (Medical stuff, anxiety, covid)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What the most memorable moment from any video game?English
8·1 month agoThe entire ending of portal 2.
spoiler
From the part where he kills you all the way up to leaving the enrichment centre. It’s all done so well and it made me realise this time there was no fakeout, this was actually goodbye and we will never get a portal 3, not with Chell at least.
Reaching the peak of celeste was an incredible moment for me and the summit chapter is such a good “final” gauntlet. I’ve gone on to beat everything but farewell and the entire game is so well made.
(My thumbs really hurt though)

2·1 month ago(I am on the younger, but not youngest, side of Gen Z)
The uk made exams “easier” (they made exams less about memorising facts and more about applying them) for students in secondary school during the lockdowns, that was quite nice. (And I dont know anyone who did any worse in exams because of lockdown)
I definitely feel like I’m not as good as socialising as I should be, but I don’t know if that’s just me because I don’t have a non-lockdown version of myself to compare to.
I think I would rather be the person I am because of the lockdown than the person I would have been without it. (although I didn’t lose anyone close to me, I definitly think the world would have been better without it)

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Don't fix the problem just change the parametersEnglish
41·1 month agoStudents not being able to read an analogue clock being a reason may seem silly, but being able to read one shouldn’t be a requirement to be able to do well in exams, especially UK exams where students have enough to deal with already.
I guess encouraged would have been a better word…
Part of rimworld is about the horrible shit you are forced to do. The sims players do all of this BY CHOICE

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your favorite version of FTL in science fiction?English
35·2 months agoWhat I like about FTL is how it works with the story.
My favourite examples are Elite Dangerous and Dune.
Elite Dangerous’s FTL tech is based on alien tech and that allows the developers to do cool stuff that you wouldn’t expect in an mmo (this is usually a loading screen so when this first started happening people were terrified).
And Dune’s idea of having the entirety of interstellar civilisation dependent on one substance that can only be made on one planet, which also has other uses extremely important to different groups, sets the stage perfectly for what happens in the books.
Oh wow, I never realised it was you drawing these! I really like them!
I wouldn’t buy it if it was bad, but any form of titanfall 3 would at least be something
So we won’t even get a shitty titanfall 3?

Games@lemmy.world•Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 will now contain all clans without DLC after backlashEnglish
58·3 months ago“Sorry we couldn’t get away with it” vibes
The publisher is paradox isn’t it? They’ve done this with nearly all of their recent games.
The only difference is that the games they published are left to die after the backlash and the games developed in house continue to be developed but with a slightly less invasive dlc policy for a few months.
I always try to have something to look forward to, I don’t know how your life is so I don’t know if it is possible for you but it can be as mundane as meeting up with friends or family.

Games@lemmy.world•Borderlands 4 Launches To Mostly Negative Steam Reviews Over Performance Issues And CrashingEnglish
2·3 months agoAs someone looking in from the outside, the problem is with the way UE5 markets itself, (people using UE5 can correct me). The appeal of UE5 is that it does all the boring stuff for you. For example, instead of buying a good light system off of your engine’s marketplace or making your own you can just use lumen. Any system marketed as something you can “just use” is going to get implemented wrong because its appeal is supposed to be that it is low effort.
^(no shame to devs that do think like this, game development is hard and having solutions like this just gives more time to make the game you want)^
But it does make sense that it can be used correctly, UE5 is way to mainstream for it to be built on systems that never work.

Not quite the same idea but try reading “jekyll and hyde”
