It refers to either a limited time reward structure where you pay for the ability to earn rewards such as cosmetics or other perks in multiplayer games such Fortnite and Valorant (If you don’t earn the needed XP within the designated timeframe then you may not even get those rewards you paid for) or access to DLC content in general for both single and multiplayer games where some functionality/maps/modes are gated behind a single or recurring payment.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do people who can read Chinese, Japanese and other non latin scripts use a bigger font size?English
1·11 months agoI think it would be incredibly hard to get people to switch without a compelling reason. Keep in mind that our modern keyboard layout is 150+ years old despite alternatives existing. Arabic letters are very close to English ones in sound but the readability suffers for me at least because it’s written in cursive with a lot of very similar-looking shapes (think of an i with 1 dot on top and an i with 2 dots being 2 separate letters) necessitating bigger font sizes.
English is about half of the internet and the modern lingua franca so unless it gets replaced or evolves over time, either of which would take decades, I don’t think any central body could make that change.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•For those who work at night... Do you have any problems to falling asleep and waking well rested during the day?English
7·1 year agoBlackout curtains help a lot from my experience. I have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep to begin with and those make a big difference with or without an offset sleep schedule.
Melatonin can also help with sleep duration/quality but its also easy to become dependent on it to fall asleep so not ideal for long term.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do different ethnicities/races look different?English
6·1 year agoI think the impact of wealth and access to nutrition and an environment that does not stunt development plays a major role here as well. A good example of this is height in Europe post-industrial revolution and improvements in medicine:

Most notable being a 20cm increase in the Netherlands in just over 100 years as well as changes in places that industrialised quickly like China:

Not to say that geography plays no role but it’s closer to 10cm gap than a 30cm one.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some astroturfed or biased online spaces (ie. subreddits) that newcomers would not know about?English
163·1 year agoAny popular posts that involve a minority/enemy of right wingers doing something bad or sticking out get brigaded. A blatant example is PublicFreakout where threads are usually fairly normal unless it’s a black/arab/Indian person doing the antagonizing then pretty much all the top comments are dog or regular whistles. Similar “brigading” can happen even in a city subreddit similar to r/Canada even if they are regular users otherwise. If the post is good enough fodder the subreddit will suddenly resemble a klan meetup even if it’s usually otherwise “normal”.
ActualPublicFreakout is an alternative that doesn’t need brigading because it’s already similar to WorldNews.
I’ve curated a list based on my own preferences. A couple caveats are that I haven’t played most of them, some stuff like DBZ and Yugioh are whatever if you’re not into those franchises and some stuff has better ports elsewhere and isnt included: https://pastebin.com/Fv2RtN61

71·1 year agoOpenBoard. Has what I need in terms of customization and I can turn off word prediction/correction (not sure if it even has it to begin with). Used to use Swiftkey several years ago but i like OpenBoard more nowadays.
That looks correct to me. Try doing a Ctrl+F5 on the theme selection page in settings for it to show up in the dropdown if you haven’t done that.
You need to put the .css file directly into the extra_theme folder. As for documentation and how to make them I didn’t find much myself so I did some trial and error with another person’s custom theme. I’ve got some commented stuff at the bottom of our instance’s theme if that’s of any help.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the best way to measure the size of the government?English
14·1 year agoGovernment spending/revenue as percentage of GDP is the common proxy for government size. That said actual empirical evidence doesn’t lead to clear cut conclusions about the relationship between economic growth/outcomes and government spending. It’s very much dependent on the country, quality of government institutions and components of the expenditure.
Intuitively, you can clearly see that if you had 2 identical countries where 50% of gov spending went to building schools, hospitals and roads in one and paying interest on national debt in the other then you would expect very different outcomes with the same government “size”.
For the US, that metric has been close to 30% for the last several decades with spikes during crises like 2008 and 2020 (changes to money supply or “minting” is a component of government size but usually a temporary one). It’s been relatively stable outside of that since the 1970s. https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/government-spending-to-gdp
Relative to the rest of the world’s rich countries it’s on the lower end:

In my view, it’s highly dependent on the quality of the government institutions and components of spending. People immediately think of inefficiency and bureaucracy when governments are brought up but there is empirical evidence to show that gov spending on things like education and infrastructure are usually “productive” in additional to contributing to factors that may not be properly captured by measures like GDP growth.
In short, people reducing government spending/regulations as inherently bad/controlling are at least not being completely honest because it’s a very complicated discussion.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is a used ThinkPad Carbon X1 Gen 6 worth it for $400?English
1·1 year agoI think this one is a better option if you’re concerned about performance but either this or the i5 16GB are both good. The T14 will just weigh a bit more and be a little thicker but it’s not much a difference unless you’re carrying it around all the time.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is a used ThinkPad Carbon X1 Gen 6 worth it for $400?English
1·1 year agoI think it’s an alright deal for the $345 one. More than Ebay prices but used Thinkpads are definitely worth it. I don’t think it’s worth going for the i7 for that much more if you’re just doing office type work.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the least shit online store of the shitty ones? such as: Wish, AliExpress, etc..English
1·2 years agoAliexpress is basically amazon with longer shipping time in my experience. Each seller has their own store rating similar to ebay so as long as you exercise judgement ie. Dont buy from brand new stores with 0 feedback or things that are too good to be true and avoid certain things like batteries and storage media unless you know exactly what you’re buying you should be fine. I’ve bought a lot of stuff from there (mostly electronics) and haven’t had bad experiences

18-24 usually gets grouped together for census and survey stuff so you got a good year left in the tank before you’re part of the 25-44 crowd
