Others have given plenty of good reasons. But on top of that they’ll make money from all the people paying for the subscription but currently not using it, like any subscription service does. Most users won’t use their vpn 100% of the time

100W idle is a lot imo. That’s about €0.50 per day where I live -> more than €150 per year in power consumption. To be fair, you’re running quite a lot of things at the same time.
My experience is that all the things software you listed works on Linux Mint. Both the operating system and the programs were easy to install. With the exception of Proton Drive. There is no Linux version afaik and the third party software I tried did not fully sync everything. I’m still looking for a solution.

Not just populating with content, but also create revenue in some way. Otherwise creators won’t post their content there, they have to make a living from whatever platforms they’re on after all
Some estimates claim that (life) science produces about 2% of worldwide plastic waste even though only 0.1% of the population works in this industry. I’m not sure how accurate these estimates are, but I find them believable considering how much waste I see every day in labs. On the upside, this waste usually stays in contained systems and doesn’t end up in the ocean.

I just briefly went through what’s in the update. It’s mostly visuals and some minor integrations? Or am I missing something?

I think you’re on point with the malicious compliance. Google doesn’t want to give up power and control. Requiring all installations to run through them seems to be their workaround.

Ridiculous cookie wall, can’t use the website

He rightfully points out in the video that even if the data isn’t sold, it could still be leaked and then proceeds to show how insecure the camera systems are. This kind of surveillance infrastructure just shouldn’t exist to begin with.

Check out the Collabra Office android app. It probably covers your needs.
Same difference in day to day use.
The important discussion is often lost due to confusing semantics. Extend it to languages other than English and some don’t even have two separate words. Even in English this problem arises with anarchist (person part of the movement or person who does whatever the fuck they want).
To be fair, that’s not just due to corporations but also due to the mismatch in meaning between anarchist as a political movement and anarchist as a word from the dictionary. The movement covers only a small portion of what the word covers. Communicating more clearly as a movement can avoid the confusion

What you describe might be true for Canada, but it doesn’t apply to all universities. Many universities have two primary tasks: research and education. These are two separate tasks with overlap.
I do find it understandable if publicly funded universities place restrictions on how many students they accept per program as it’s their duty to give back go society.

Ugh, this shit again…
Are there any initiatives out there to call a stop to this? Or even better, initiatives to introduce legislation that forbids setting up this kind of surveillance infrastructure altogether?
But what do you get for that money?

It doesn’t have to be email. Denmark has such a system, called e-boks. It’s essentially your digital mailbox where you can receive most letters from government agencies and banks (no more paper!). Other institutions and companies can use it too (not sure about who can and can’t use, maybe you can send ‘letters’ from one individual to another too?). I think it’s also possible to respond in some cases.
Facebook can be very useful for organizing events, it has some occasionally useful groups (e.g. when looking for roommates) and marketplace is one of the few places where people still sell things for way below their value (probably correlated to which people still use Facebook). But as a social media platform it is pretty much dead as far as I’m concerned.

Does a pi hole combine with a VPN? I assume the pi hole can’t see what’s in the VPN traffic and therefore can’t block anything?

I think the main gain is in automation scripts for people with little coding experience. They don’t need perfect or efficient code, they just need something barely functioning which is something that LLMs can generate. It doesn’t always work, but most of the time it works well enough
Less than a GB per day on average for me, don’t use it most of the time, mostly for watching content abroad
