  • I mean, technically, you could containerize all the elements you need. Firewall, load balancers, identity management, etc. but at that point, you are creating your companies own version of the cloud services that are generally one of the big draws to the cloud already since you aren’t directly developing and maintaining those systems anymore. Once you have made “aws lite” in container form, you can then deploy that directly to the compute instances on any cloud provider. But now you need to maintain everything like you were running on prem (i.e. more developers and network engineers again) all while paying a pretty penny to multiple cloud providers and now that your infrastructure containers need to run 24/7 instead of only having your compute resources being ran on demand your costs will skyrocket so at that point why not just move back to on prem hosting.

  • I mean I love linux but the biggest hurdle is that certain software/games just aren’t compatible. I use my pc for sim racing in vr a lot. With no ability to use iracing or my vr in linux I’m stuck. While I hate Windows and would prefer to use linux, I’m not going to abandon my hobby and all the equipment I have for it just to use an os I prefer. Throughout many different domains of use for a computer their are many different variations of stories like mine. Until the software and games people use can be supported in the linux ecosystem ‘good enough’ never happens. Like for basic computer use linux is already better than good enough its fantastic, it just works has intuitive user interfaces the bones of the OS are there. The problem is that many companies and software providers just aren’t filling the gap that is the needs beyond basic web browsing, media playback and, playing older/indie games without anticheat. Without the substance people expect it doesnt matter how good the bones of the system are they are gonna be trapped in windows and linux will be stuck as the outcast programmers and enthusiasts use while knowing they have to still use windows for the niche use cases they have. And time and time again, eventually running 2 systems gets tiring and linix use/adoption slows back down again.

  • But why would roll be inverted? For planes you just need to think about the fact you are controlling the airplanes pitch not the camera view, which is why my camera controls are always regular in flight games but then obviously the y axis for flight is inverted. Pitch left roll left, pitch right roll right, pitch forward go down, pitch back go up. I.e. If you tilt the plane to the left it rolls to the left, if you tilt it to the right it rolls to the right, if you tilt the plane back it changes the attitude of the flight path to bring you higher same thing in reverse for pitching forward. I agree with your last statement for fps/tps games though unless both are inverted for camera it just doesnt make any logical sense and instead are trying to map flight controls to a head which just completely looses me.

  • Would it dilate for either observer, though? If the purpose of it is to just fold space time in essence shrinking the distance traveled I dont think we would see any significant time dilation occur for either point of reference as in that hypothetical scenario you would be using the fold in space time produced by such a drive to make two points in space closer together so in theory you never travel significantly close to the speed of light and time should flow pretty much “normally” for both points of reference. What I do wonder is would anything that gets touched by the horizon of that bubble/wave be effected, and such a drive would have to cause massive gravitational waves like a boat that moves through the ocean, what would be the effects from such a drive functioning in that manor be to anything near it or that it touches. And I’ll state I’m in no means a physicist by any means so I could be completely of the mark here any many ways lol

  • I mean it depends on how you reach the speed of light. Straight up propulsion correct but then you cant get the energy required for that, if we can somehow figure out a way to bend space to create a “warp” bubble the internal zone should act as we expect, but the energy requirements there are still fucking enormous and im not sure that would be feasible without us inadvertently creating a singularity that we could never escape from so there are just problems inherently there for either method lol

  • I’m talking about sapiens not human caused extinctions.

Yeah, we really aren’t that special though lets be real here. We act like we are the only emotional animals, only animals who think, etc. There are plenty of examples with other species demonstrating similar phenomenon and if humans were out of the picture there is nothing that would prevent another species from evolving and becoming sapient like humans.

    That is far from guaranteed

Nothing is guaranteed but none of the damage we are doing has the potential to do any more harm than the planet has endured in the past and shown to bounce back from remarkably well and creating new species, ecosystems etc. The only thing far from guaranteed is us actually destroying all life on the planet. So much has to go “right” for that to happen, whereas for life to continue the planet, nature just needs to evolve and continue as it has done numerous times in the past.

Listen, if you want to say we are destroying certain species, environments, etc. I’m not going to disagree with you. But the planet and life in general has bounced back from worse situations than any man made catastrophe can do at this point. To act like we are some special life that has the ability to destroy our planet the only species that can evolve to be “advanced” (if you call figuring out creative ways to slowly kill ourselves advanced lol) you are just demonstrating the human god complex fallacy thats lead to creation myths and tales of God’s creating us in their image. We are nothing more than another animal on the planet, everything we create is a natural product of nature. What we deam unnatural compounds will eventually be a food source for some bacteria or mold like species down the line, just like wood. Whether we will be around for that future is the question realistically, not if it will happen.

  • No we really arent, an asteroid did more than we ever could in a shorter time frame even if we detonated every single nuke on the planet we wouldnt come close to that level of destruction and carbon release. The planet has recovered from far worse than humans. All you need is bacteria and another billion years and life will emerge again in the worst of scenarios. Not to mention life even started with worse conditions then we can create today. It’s such human hubris to assume we are doing anything more but killing ourselves and the species we rely on for our dominance.

Fair enough but both the chrome and Firefox password managers are cross platform and can be exported and imported supporting the ability to move away from them in the future should you choose. So for a first step from having insecure passwords to a password manager that gives strong passwords for someone who doesnt even want to rema strong password in the first place, they are good steps in the right direction. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
